7 things every small business website needs in 2026

We review a lot of small business websites, and the same problems come up again and again. None of them are about beauty — they're about clarity, speed and trust. Here's the checklist we use, so you can run it against your own site.

1. A clear offer above the fold

Within three seconds, a visitor should know what you do, where you do it, and what to do next. "Welcome to our website" tells them nothing. "Physiotherapy in Tumba — book your appointment online" tells them everything.

2. Fast loading on a phone

Most local searches happen on mobile, often on mediocre connections. If your site takes more than ~3 seconds, a real share of visitors leave before seeing anything. Heavy sliders, oversized images and bloated themes are the usual suspects.

3. Local SEO basics

Your city and service in page titles, a complete Google Business Profile, consistent opening hours and address, and structured data so Google understands who you are. Boring, cheap, and worth more than most ad budgets.

4. Trust signals

Real photos instead of stock, reviews, recognizable client names, a physical address and a face. People buy from people — especially locally.

5. One obvious call to action

Decide the one thing you want a visitor to do — call, book, request a quote — and make it the most visible element on every page. Five competing buttons equal zero decisions.

6. Zero-friction contact or booking

Every extra form field costs conversions. If you take appointments, online booking with automatic confirmation beats "call us during office hours" every single time — it works while you sleep.

7. Someone who maintains it

A website is not a one-time purchase. Software updates, security patches, backups, small content changes — without an owner, every site slowly rots. This is exactly why our plans include maintenance and a Care plan instead of treating launch as the finish line.

How does your site score?

Count honestly. Five or more? You're in good shape. Three or fewer? You're losing customers you never see. We'll happily check your site against this list — free, no obligations.
